Storage Systems

The HPCCC operates dual StorageTek 9310 (Powderhorn) Automated Cartridge System (ACS) Libraries (also called "silos").

The silos have numerous StorageTek 9840A/B/C and 9940B tape drives installed. As of September 2005 there were over 410 terabytes of data in the silos, with a 50% compounding annual increase.

Disk systems provide another 50+ terabytes of capacity from high performance RAID systems.

NEC TX7 file servers provide 22 terabytes of global file system storage capacity to the SX-6 supercomputer. Over 12 gigabytes per second disk throughput has been measured on the SX-6.

A Bureau SAN provides another 30 terabytes of storage and 4 gigabytes per second of bandwidth to other Bureau systems. CSIRO operates an SGI Altix and IBM eServer 1350, having an additional 8 terabytes.

During 2006 the HPCCC will be part of a Bureau of Meteorology project to consolidate and renew large scale storage systems, including the tape silos, storage area networks, and associated software into a data centric architecture that will enable a more efficient, robust, and resilient storage infrastructure.

Archiving Systems

Bureau archiving systems are based on SAM-FS software. CSIRO archiving systems are based on DMF/TMF software.
